Delhi–Gurugram: Starting May 29, the much-anticipated 2.5-kilometre tunnel on the Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway will open to traffic for three hours daily—from 12 PM to 3 PM. This partial opening is expected to ease congestion and cut travel time significantly for commuters heading to Delhi Airport from Gurugram, Sohna, and Jaipur.
Why It Matters
This move is part of the National Highways Authority of India's (NHAI) phased strategy to fully operationalize the Dwarka Expressway. The Gurugram section of the expressway has been functional since last year, while the Delhi portion—including the tunnel—was still under construction. With this tunnel now ready, smoother travel from Manesar to the airport is on the horizon.
Connectivity Game-Changer
The Dwarka Expressway stretches from the Kherki Daula toll plaza in Gurugram to Shiv Murti near Mahipalpur, Delhi. Once the entire route is open, it will decongest the heavily trafficked corridor between Dhaula Kuan and the Sirhaul border, offering a faster, less congested alternative for thousands of daily commuters.
Project Overview
Cost: ₹9,000 crore
Total Length: 29 km (18.9 km in Gurugram, 10.1 km in Delhi)
Features: 23 km elevated road, 4 km underground tunnel
Key Links:
2.5 km tunnel (Dwarka to Delhi-Gurugram Expressway)
4 km tunnel (Shiv Murti to Palam Airport)
Once the entire project is operational, travel time between Manesar and Palam Airport is expected to reduce to just 30 minutes.
This limited opening marks a significant milestone for the project and promises relief for commuters and travelers from Jaipur, Gurugram, and surrounding regions heading to the airport.
